Volunteers — We would remind the members of the No. 1 City Eifles that a meeting is to be held this eveuing, when all the members are particularly requested to attend. An Inspection parade of the town companies is to be hold on Thursday evening next in the Botanical Gardens. Theatrical. — The play going public of Nelson will doubtless show their appreciation of that charming actress, Mrs. H. Jackson, by giving her a bumper house at the performance which is to be given for her benefit to-night, aud which, iucludes the comedy of " The Honeymoon," and ''Lady Audley's Secret." Scientific Association. — The monthly meeting of this association takes place tomorrow evening, when Mr. Batchelor is to read a paper on sericulture. Fire at Motueka — We regret to learn that a serious fire has occurred on Major Paton's farm in the Moiueka district, whereby a large amount of property has been destroyed. Full particulars have not yet come to hand. Flax. — In the Government Gazette of 24th ult,, we notice that letters patent have been granted to Mr. Luke Nattrass of this town, for an invention for separating the fibrous part of the phormium tenax and other fibrous plants from the non-fibrous portions of such plants, by the chemical and mechanical means described in the specification annexed to the said letters patent.
