The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1870.

Off to the Races. — Since 10 o'clock this morning the streets have presented quite a deserted appearance, every one of a sporting turn of mind, and our Nelson folk are notably so, being off to Wakefield, the great centre of attraction for the day. Vehicles of every description from the " one horse shay" to the drag with its team of four horses have been put iuto requisition, and been streaming along the Wairaea road greatly to the delight of the tolikeeper, who, by the time we write, is no doubt busily employed in counting up his gains, and wishing that a steeplechase ■was an event of more frequent occurrence than is at present the case. There never has been a promise of better sport than tbafr. which the programme leads our racing men to expect to-day, and the Nelson horses will, if all be true that is reported of our visitors, have to look to .heir laurels. Titoko Waru, who has emerged from his fastnesses in the neighborhood of Wanganui, is an opponent that is not to be trifled with, and all the generalship of the riders and the pluck aud endurance of their steeds, will have to be brought into play to snatch the prize from the group of the "noble savage." Trump, too, is reported to be a dangerous card to play against, and the Rustic that is opposed to him will have to be as Sprightly as Quicksilver, and as quick as the Doctor, if he intends to preserve his well-earned fame from total Eclipse.
