His Excellency the Governor has beed instructed by her Majesty's Principal Secretary of State for the Colonies to recognise provisionally tbe appointment of Johann F. A. Kelliug, Esq., as North German Consul at Nelson. Sporting. — Mr. Redwood's and Mr. Stafford's horses returned from Canterbury in tho Lord Ashley yesterday. By the same steamer there arrived Trump, a Canterbury horse, to run in the Waimea South Steeplechf.se Meeting. Trump was bred by Mr. Lovegrove, of Flaxbourne, and is by Hero out of Camilla. Theatrical. — The Star Company which has lately been performing in Wellington, where it was highly spoken of by the local journal'!, arrived yesterday in the Lord Ashley, aud will act to-night at tlie Oddfellows Hall. The programme includes the drama in two acts entitled Time Tries All, the laughable interlude of The Secret or the Jealous Wife, and concludes with the farce of "A Phenomenon in a Smockfrock." The low prices charged, combined with the fact that for many months there has been no dramatic performance of any description in Nelsoh are likely to secure a good house. The Weather and the Crops. — The magnificent harvest weather with which we bave been favored lately has proved a vast boon to our farmers, who have been busily engaged for the last three weeks in getting in their crops. Iu most places the oats and wheat are safely stacked, and we are glad to learn that the yield of these two descriptions of grain has been most prolific throughout the country, with the exception of some few farms in the Wakefield and Waimea West districts, where the wheat has to some extent been attacked by rust. A considerable breadth of barley, the crop which of all others has done the best this season, still remains to be harvested, but another week of such weather as we are enjoyiug now will see the larger portion of it stacked' Threshing will soon commence, and we trust that the fanners will then find that their estimates of the yield of their grain crops will prove rather under than ovor the mark. Notice is given in the Government Gazette that a reward of £5, in addition to that paid by the Admiralty, will be paid by the Government on the apprehensiou of any deserter from Her Majesty's Naval forces while serving in New Zealand, and that the most vigorous proceedings will be taken against any person enticing away, harbouring^ concealing, or employing Naval deserters.

A Testimonial, consisting of a very powerful field glass, and a silver pencil case, has been presented to Mr. Arthur Austin, third officer of the Lord Ashley* by the passengers and officers of that ship* as a mark of their appreciation of his gallantry in rescuing a child from drowning in Wellington Harbor. The steamer Airedale is advertised to make a pleasure excursion from Wellington to Picton and Queen Charlotte's Sound on the 7th instant, returning to Wellington the same day. The Besignation of Mr. Fitzherbert as Commissioner of Crown Lands for Wellington has been accepted, on and from the loth July next, and leave of absence, without salary has been granted to Mr. Fitzherbert up to that time. The Provincial Government of Auckland propose to offer a bonus for a paper manufactory, and also for the manufacture of woollen goods. Latest Auckland Telegrams state that there is great trouble at Ohinerauri, where the miners are determinod to rush the district if Government does not open it. The Carandinis arrived in Dunedin by the Omeo on her last trip from Melbourne. A Warning to Fish eaters. Last Friday morning (says the Otago Times) a number of persons at East Taieri, who had eaten some barracouta, which a man had just been hawking about for sale, were seized with vomiting, and became so ill, that some of them have not yet recovered. Dr Ingli3, who attended the sufferers, imputes their indisposition to their having eaten the fish, which appears to have been exposed to the moon's rays. One hundred and twenty-eight head of cattle have recently been purchased from a runholder, near Wanganui, for shipment to the West Coast. The price paid was £7 10s. per head.
