CORRESPONDENCE.
*** We are desirous of affording every reasonable facility for the discussion of public subjects; but it must be understood that we are in no way responsible for the opinions expressed by correspondents. To the Editor of the Nelson Evening Mail. Sir — It will be found on enquiry that there is no correctness in the report referred to by your correspondent '• Digger " in Saturday's paper, that a miner from the Baton, having found a reef had applied to the Superintendent for protection and could not get it. lhe facts are these, a digger came into town last week to get protection for his claim in certain alluvial diggings on ihe Baton with the icater- rights in connection therewith, and the Provincial Secretary very courteously pointed out to him how he could best secure his interests pending the expected proclamation of the district. He had found no reef, nor had he heard of anyone else finding one. I am personally acquainted with the man, and having met him accidentally on Thursday last he told me the occasion which brought him to Nelson. I am &c., T.M.
