AMERICAN NOTES.
Michigan is the third sheep-growing State in the Union. She has 3,984,191 sheep ; ludiana has 2,882,176 ; Illinois, 2,736,431 ; lowa, 2,591,379. The water in Philadelphia is entirely out at last, and consequently the great Baptist revival has been reduced to the necessity of giving its note at 30 days to new converts. A matrimonial broker has put out his sign in Memphis. A correspondent of the Boston Journal says the whiskey destroyed by the late Philadelphia fire would have made sixtyfour millions of "straight drinks," which, at fifteen cents a glass, would have amounted to 800,000,000 dol, more thau twothirds of the national debt. A dummy for city railroads, which consumes its own smoke and steam, has been invented in Detroit. The engine is sixteeen horse- power, and runs noiseless. A man in Rhode Island was sent to gaol for ten days for sleeping in church. Nothing was done to the clergyman. In Philadelphia, the use of sponges, saturated with water, as fixtures upon the heads of draught horses, is nearly universal. The passenger railroad companies generally have adopted the idea. A serious obstacle to the proper working of the Nevada silver mines is the intense heat which is developed. At a depth of a 1000 ft the thermometer shows a temperature of lOOdeg. Fahrenheit, and engines to pump in air and work fans have beeu introduced, but even with these appliances the heat is unbearable.
