The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, JANUARY 18, 1870.
English Mail. — The out-going mail to England, &c, per Tararua, closes tomorrow evening, at 7 o'clock. Bath. — We uotice by advertisement that the luxury of a warm bath cau now be obtained for a shilling, instead of oue-aod-sixpeuce, as heretofore, at the Nelson Bath Rooms, Hardy-street. Wesleyan Sunday Schools. — A public tea meeting takes pla< e this evening at 6 o'clock, iu aid ot tbe above schools, after whicli tbere will be a public meeting, wheu several ministers and friends will gire addresses. The Canterbury Race Meeting coniiuf nces to-duy, and is coutiuued to- morrow and Thursday. Mr. H. Redwood, we uuderstand, has entered three j horse.-*;, Economy, Peeress, aud Misfortune, j and Mr. Stafford, Ma»euta. j Chinese in Otago. — We have the authority of the Otago and Southland Mining Journal for stating that there are about 2,640 Celestials in that Province. Thatcher and Company play tonight at the Nelson Assembly Room, aud we are promised a new local, " Tlie Wangapeka Dispute," and a new song by Small, called "Scrip." Mr. Daniels' will, no doubt, shiue as usual iu his descriptive | songs, and aliogetlier, we augur for ourselves a pleasaut eveniug. Wangapeka Survky. — We have reason to believe that the survey of the line between Mount Arthur aud the diggers' Mount Owen will be completed in a few days (weather peimitting). Mr. Marchant will then report to the General Government, so that we may shortly expect an official solutioa of this vexed question. Stray Horses and Carts. — Whose duiy is it to eee that horses aud traps are nut left uucared ior iu our streets ? Who has to watch for the nightly depredator iu our garueu aud to see tbat hoises and i cattle do not ''go at large"? Surely this duty pertains to some one, and the sooner he is reminded of the same the better for our vegetable crops. The Commercial Quartz Mining Company. — At a crushiug yesterday of the stoue sent over by those engaged on behalf of this Company. We are iuformed that the result was anything but satisfactory. This may be accounted for from the lact that tbe stoue crushed was obtained from a part ot the reef distant from that wbich previously yielded such good results. Collingwood Gold Fields. — We are glad to learn tbat many of our citizeus wbo are engaged in the mining venture at Collingwood have determined on securing tlie services of Captain Cock of the Duo Mountain L'onipauy. We believe that the Pioneer, Commeicial, and Masonic Companies have united in requesting this gentleman to report upon their respective properties. Captain Cock leaves Nelson by the steamer to-morrow morning and we have uo hesitation in saying that a conscientious report will be obtained. The Water Supply.— Mauy persons were present yesterday during the crushing of some quartz sent from Collingwood to the Commercial Company, and various were thecommeuts when it was discovered that, about each ten. minutes, the water by wliich the crushing machiue was driven failed to perform its task. It was generally believed that this failure of the machiue to perform its continuous crushing was caused by the watering cart when | taking its supply from the main; If this is the case surely the subject should be inquired into, or those who have employed, , or who now are making preparations for employing the water supply as a motive power may possibly be undeceived, and that at a time wheu much expense shall , halve beeu uselessly incurred.
