THE WANGAPEKA.
To the Editor op the Nelson Evening Mail. Sib— ln the account of a visit to the Wangapeka reef which appeared in yesterday's Colonist, the impression intended fer the public mind is very visible. The manner in which the old settlers and diggers of that quarter are eulogised and i heir great undertakings are noticed, form a strong contrast to the account of " West Coast notorious character."- I cannot give the writer great credit for a knowledge of mining affairs, indeed ■ the very expression, )* a piece of which 1 mined with a pickaxe," shows his vpry limitpd notions of mining. I have hitherto been inclined to regard the Colonist as an advocate for general mining interest?, out on reading this article I am induced to believe that it is now identifying itself with a certain class or faction. A class which it appears is endeavoring to crush one monopoly, and in the Consequent confusion to create another. Those characterised as disturbers of the peace we the very men who should be thanked that peace was not broken, (a statement which Sergeant Goodall if called upon to do so. is ready to c^rroberate), while on the other hand the party represented by the Colonist as peaceable miners have been trying, to intimidate, the other party by displaying life-preservers and threatening to shoot them — facts of. which the police on the ground are cognisant. I can s^e no cause why the writer of this article should thus misrepresent the true state of affairs unless his interests are identical with those of the party he favors. Trus ing from tbe usual impartiality displayed by the Mail, that you will find room for this. I am, &c, An Unlucky Miner.
