In Auckland a man has been bound over to keep the peace in two sureties of £10 for - boxing his young wife's ears because she was playing "kiss in the ring." A fatal cab accident occurred in Auckland last week whereby a man named Thomas Fitzpatrick was killed and his companion, Robert Davidson, seriously injured. A pkivate letter from England states that the new bishop of Auckland had met

with an accident by which his leg had been hurt. His leaving England, it is said, will be delayed a month in consequence. Thames Goldfields. — A crushing of 80 tons of stone from the Vale of Avoca claim has yiel-led an average of 7| ounces to the ton, and 18 tons from the Jamaica claim have averaged 9§ ounces. The Long Drive during the month of December yielded very nearly ten thousand pounds sterling. Auckland Volunteers. — Speaking of the Auckland Volunteers, the Herald sa yg : — Our citizen soldiers do not attend to" their duties in, by any means, a satisfactory manner. We do not lay the whole blame on their own shoulders, for the Act and Regulations are not perfection ; the capitation is miserably low, aud our public affords them next to no countenance whatever. Our Volunteer force, before it will ever be worth anything at all, must be entirely remodelled ; the whole matter must recommence de novo, and on very different footing ; and an Act, something in the form of the Victorian one, must be substituted for our present wishy-washy make-believe cumbrous absurdity.
