MEETING OF MINERS.

■ i i ■ ■Qi ■■ I imm ■■ The events which have arisen in connection with the Wangapeka are exciting considerable attention araon» the mining population on the West Coast arid a meeting was held at YWsiport on the Ist iust., to initiate a Mining League, whose purpose it should be to agitate for increased representation of mining interests iv the General Assembly, for the amendment aud improvement of mining regulations and courts, and generally for increased facilities and protection to mining interests. The c' air was taken by Mr. O'Counor, M.P.C. and the following resolutions were uuanimously adopted : — " That it is desirable that miners should associate themselves together for the special purpose of securing better legislation on behalf or' the mining interest by the representative bodies of this Colony." " That such association be called the New Zealand Miners' League, and that a Committee of seven with power to add to their number be formed in this district, for the purpose of communi eating with miners iv other districts with a view to the institution of such a League throughout the leugth and breadth of the Colony." •'That it be one of the interim duties of the Committee to commuuicate with the local members of the General Assembly and Provincial Council, with the object of representing to them the matters to which they should give their most particular attention." The following resolution was also proposed, but the Westport Times, from which we derive our information, does not mention whether or not it was carried : — "That the miners at this meeting wish • to express their sympathy with their fellow-miners at Waugapeka, and call upon the General Government to assist the miners in any ligitatiou which may eusue in the assertion of the rights in dispute." A Committee consisting of Messrs Barrowman, M'Gill, M'AHster, Burns, Cowan, Duuu, and Carmody, having been elected, the meeting separated. , ■ , i ,
