A cargo of Bay of Islands' coal has been imported into Wellington. It is reported that Mr. Fitzherbert will shortly be compelled by family affairs to visit England, and that his stay will extend over two years. The survey of the Manawatu block has again been stopped. Some 60 or 80 of the dissentients have collected and interrupted the work by pulling down some of the trigonometrical stations. Colonel Harrington who is on an official tour inspecting the Volunteers, arrived in Wellington from Wanganui on Wednesday night. He expresses himself much pleased with the appearance of the men at Wanganui. The Flying Squadron. —The visit of the Flying Squadron to Wellington seems likely to place the. inhabitants of that province, in the somewhat unenviable position of the traditional white elephant —they will be very proud to have so noble a fleet in their waters, and very glad to see so many strange faces among them, but what they are to do with their visitors when they get them there, they appear to be quite at a loss to know. We find that in the absence of Dr. Featherston. a meeting was called by Mr. Taylor of "persons willing to contribute to the expenses of entertaining officers and men." To this invitation twenty persons only were found to respond, when Mr. Taylor stated that he wished it to go abroad to the people of Wellington that they would have to find the money which would be required themselves, as the Provincial Government had none to expend on such a purpose, though perhaps the Genera) Government was better off. Mr. Gisborne explained that the General Government were in no better position than the Provincial Government, as all they could do was to give the Admiral, the use of the Ministerial residence and to make arrangements about horses and carriages.
