The customs duties of France have considerably iucreased since the introduction of a more liberal system of commercial legislation. Gen. Lebceuf, the new War Minister of Frauce, like his predecessor Marshal TNiei,. is an engineer oflicer. He is 60 years old, and said to be phys ; cally the biggest man in the French army. Infanticide and abortion are said to be very much, on the increase in France; and the'local authorities, instead of briuging these crimes to light, seek rather to conceal them, in order that they should not appear inthe criminal statistics. Great Fire in Albania. — On the night of the 9th August nearly the whole of Jauina was burnt to the ground. The fire lasted nine hours, and . the bazaar, about 1,300 shops, and 300 private houses were reduced to ashes. No lives were lost, but the. destruction of property must have been enormous, for nearly all the goods and provisions which were stored in the bazaar perished. The catastrophe has given a blow to the trade of the town which -will'long be felt. A Newly-discovered Coal- Field. — J The Moscow News reports the discovery of a considerable coal-field in the government^ of Tarn boy, the co^^^ a stratum of from 20 in. to 8 ft. in thickness, and covering an ,area; of more than I^ooo acres. Its,situation is additionally advantageous froni the -fact of its close > proximity to the ';',:' Riazan-Kozlcv Railway, which it will thus 7 --furhish^with 7a plentiful and ever-ready ; supply .' of fuel.
