MR. HENNELLY AT CHARLESTON.
Mr. Hennelly, who when in Nelson during the last session of the Provincial Council was generally known as a most taciturn member, appears to have come out in quite a new light as a defeated candidate, as will be seen -from his speech, which we give below, as it, appeared in the Westport Times: — " Mr. Hennelly: Mr. Returning Officer and Gentlemen — I appear before you in the character of a defeated candidate. I cannot say I am a worse man on that account. lam aware' that I have lost the confidence of the electors, because I joined the loyal demonstration. lam a true Irishman, and what I have done I am not sorry for. (Loud booing, and cries of dissatisfaction.) A society has been: formed to overthrow my election. (Cries of "•No; no, the Oddfellows willget. you in.") During my absence the Licensed Victual- ' lers' Association had been formed; they bad gone in to support Mr. Donne (cries of, " False,") they will never get what they sought for in Charleston.; ,' ('* Question.") I have to thank those, 171 gentlemen who voted forme; they v were the only intelligent men. (Great expression of disapproval.) Those who voted agaiiist me were the scum' of tlie earth— yahoos who could not write their names. If such persons hadfelected me, Ti would, resign to-morrow; those who have turned their coats against !me- will ibe no better in a twelvemonth. (Cry ; of "Prove Howthiey will be worse") Mr. Walsh used bad, French, and said "eclatf." { I think jogger would be better understood by him. He had no right'' to : come Here to interfere with Our election. I haye^ more influence, out of the Council than ,Mr. Donne ihasij in.!
