THE WANGAPEKA LAND SALE. A telegram having been reeeived by tlie Superintendent from th**- Colonial Secretary, a meeting of rhe Waste Lands 80-ird was called to lake, it into consideration. We -rive below the telegram, and resolution arrived at hy the Board. Wellineton, Nov 24, 1869. To the Snperintendentof Nelson. The following notice has been substituted for that inclosed in my letter of the 20ih instnui: — •'ln consequence of further information whicli rhe Government have received from hia Honor the Superintendent of the Province of Nelson, and the Commissioner of Crown Lauds nr. Nelson on ihe su^et of the sale of certain sections of land, supposed to l>e auriferous, at Wangapeka, in that province, the Government do not consider it, under all the circumstances, conducive to the puhlic interests to enforce the riyht of the Crown to the gold in such land, and have accordingly cancelled the letter written to the Superintendent of Nelson on the lst. instant in respect of the same. Although this enforcement, has heeu waived in respect of those particular lands, rhe Government reserve their right, in the interests of the public, to that enforcement in respect of other snhs of auriferous laud; and Commissioners of Crown Lands and Waste Lands Boards are cautioned against allowing such sales to be made, and the public interests thereby to he iufringed. "W. Gisborne." The Waste Lands Boa-d having taken into consideration a telegram dated the, 24th instant, addressed by rhe Colonial Secretary to the Superintendent. Re-solves unanimously — " Tliat it is the duty of the Waste Lands Board to deal wiih the Waste Lands of the Crown according to law, and they do not recognise any right on the part of the Colonial Secretary to interfere with their action. "The Board has throughout taken every precauli. n which the law allows to prevent thw sale ot' laud supposed fo be auriferous, to a payable extent, hut as there is scarcely a district in the province in which gold has not been found in larger or smaller quantity, it would be impossible ior the Board to prevent the possibility or even the probability of the purchase of j auriferous land under the 32nd and the ' 35th sections ot the Waste Lauds Act, 1863, without withdrawing every acre of | the Waste Lands ot the province from sale or lease, and thereby injuriously suspending the settlement of the country."
