THE PIONEER STEEL WORKS, TARANAKI.

Since we last had occasion to notice these works, there has been several alterations going on, and amongst the most noticeable is iv the working of the fan. By removing some of the bands that formerly drove it, and rectifying other defects, a greater speed is obtained, and consequently an increase of power in the blast. The ground aiound the works has been fenced iD, and a-gate fixed at the entrance, so that none pnt those who are employed are permitted to enter. This, we feel sure, had becmne necessary, for when we have visited she works on previous occasions, it lias si ruck us that the workmen must have been inconvenienced by being talked to by the visitors. On Thursday last the furnace was again lit, and several small charges of the artificial ore put through for the purpose of preparing it for regular work. The metal separated itself entirely from the slag, and ran freely; so we trust that we shall be able to announce in our next issue that they have got the furnace in working order, and are running off tho steel in large quantities. The directors of the Company, and the manager seem perfectly satisfied with what has already been accomplished, and from this we naturally conclude that everything is working well.-- Taranaki Herald.
