We {Grey River Argus) are informed by Mr. Wylde, the Engineer and Manager of the Grey River Coal Company, that a fine seam of coal has been discovered on the Coal Reserve, which can be worked with the greatest ease, as it rises from the river, and can be drained without the aid of inachiuery. From his recent researches on the Nelson side of the river, Mr. Wylde was led to believe that the run of auriferous quartz reefs would be through the Coal Reserve on the Westland side, and in course of operations undertaken by him to prove this, he made the equally pleasing discovery that a hitherto undiscovered seam of coal exists in such a position as to enable an enormous supply to be obtained for many years at a very small cost. This ought to prove an incentive to the new company to push on their preliminaries, so as to get into working order as soon as possible. Ix is not only in Westland that the inhabitants hope to get quartz reefs. The Charleston JEerald says: — 'From time to time we have been encouraged to believe that quartz reefs equal to any country would yet be found in the neighborhood of Charleston. It seems that the long- postponed fulfilment of this hope is about to be realised. A number of men known as Clark and party have been prospecting for the past three or four weeks in the neighborhood of Deep Creek. On Saturday they reported having found a reef on the north side of the Creek, and not far from the Brighton road, possessing indications of gold. A number of people visited the locality on Sunday, and remained over night with the view of pegging off ground on the following morning. The reef is on the side of a hill shelving down to the creek, and presents a face of four feet in depth. A number of gentlemen in town have offered to supplement the efforts of Clark and party to further prospect the reef. Gold has been found in the neighborhood of the reef in a deposit of broken quartz, shale, and; black sand. . •■''''■■'■ -. \ ,;,". ■// ■/■ - . .,
