The Nelson Evening Mail. TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 2. 1869.

Most heartily do we congratulate the electors of the Province on the result of yesterday's election. Although there was never much doubt with regard to Mr. Curtis' return, it was not for one moment anticipated that he would secure such an overwhelming majority as that which has been recorded in his favor, and it mu3t be highly satisfactory to him to find that after being two years and a half in office he has succeeded in retaining the confidence of the electors at large. We are most completely at a loss to know on what grounds the opposing candidates and their friends based their hopes of support, for certainly a more one sided contest has never been known in Nelson as will be seen by a reference to the returns from the different polling places which we publish below, and which show that in every district except the West Coast, Mr. Curtis polled a majority, and that even there he received more support than Mr. Gibbs. The contest, however, is now over and Mr. Curtis will enter upon his four years tenure of office with the gratifying knowledge that a larger number of votes have been polled in his favor than were ever yet recorded for any candidate in Nelson. We give below the returns so far as they are at present known : —

Since the above was in type we have been informed that the total number of votes polled on the West Coast were 366, which were divided as follows: — Curtis 51, Gibbs 63, Akersten 252. The totals therefore, so far as they are at present knowD, are Curtis 840, Akersten 359, Gibbs 226, Horn 6.
