WHAT SHALL WE DO ?

The state of the public mind on the West Coast with regard to the coining election is vt!ry well described by the Westport correspondent of the Charleston Herald, who writes : — All sorts of rumors have been afloat during the past few days as to the various successes of the candidates. One day a Curtisite lands from one of the steamers, and offers to stake his existense on his candidate against the country and all its inhabitants. Next day a telegram reaches town from a " reliable authority " that Akersteu is unmistakably " no where." Some Anti-Gibbite may shortly after be seen running along with the state of the poll to the latest hour just received by wire from the metropolis. Government officials are boiling over with Curtis. Ship captains and other nautical authorities blow hard the Akersten trumpet, and the country farmers insist on Gibbs being the leader of the team. There can be little doubt that to oust " the little man" will be no easy task, and should either of his opponents win the day, it will be by a small majority. It is certain also that Akersten misled his few friends on the Coast by overstating the support he is likely to get in Nelson and the country districts ; and his friends probably erred to a great extent in reckoning the votes likely to be recorded for him on the Coast. Mr. Gibbs is to address the electors this evening, and numbers of our warmest politicians say that he has much the better chance of success, and from his past career is more worthy of the confidence of the West Coast than either of his opponents.
