Resident Magistrate's Court. — Ann Hilton was charged with assaulting and maiming Mrs. Durham. The prosecutrix being unable to appear, owing to the severity of the wound she had received, prisoner was remanded until tomorrow. An escaped Lunatic. — Yesterday afternoon one of the inmates of the Lunatic Asylum, who had only arrived from the West Coast on the •> previous day, succeeded in making his escape from the yard where he had been allowed to go for exercise. He was promptly followed hy Mr. Butler, who, with the assistance of Mr. Percy and two other bystanders, succeeded in capturing him after a severe struggle, the unfortunate man displaying the greatest repugnance to returning to the asylum. The Murray, which arrived on Wednesday last, brought up from Westport, under the charge of Sub-Inspector Franklyn, a lunatic, a destitute child, and a prisoner of the name of King, who has been committed for trial at the next session of the Supreme Court for committing au indeceut assault on a young girl. Football. — The match which was to have taken place in the Botauical Gardens to-morrow afternoon, between the Town and College Clubs, has again been postponed until Wednesday next. The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Wool Compauy report as follows : — Since the close of the May-June Wool Sales, the condition of the Woollen Trade has undergone no material change, the only feature of interest being the existence of rather more private inquiry in the London market than is usual at this season of the year, and which, following upon a very heavy series of sales, may be regarded as indicating the general soundness of the manufacturing industry, and that the relations of supply and demand are perhaps not so widely disproportioned as has been generally supposed. The arrivals of Wool for the August Series*— which will probably commence on the sth or 12th of that month— -are up to the present time 137,898 Bales, in addition to about 30,000 Bales withdrawn from the late Sales. Mete Kingi' s dignity has been heedlessly ruffled. When expressing his views onthe question" of "Internal Defence," he remarked :— -Now you, the Assembly and Government, must make clear what yoii ; intend to do in reference to the Maoris. At this very time, some mutton-birds which have been brought up for me from Otago : have been searched, ; to. see if there was any gunpowder in them. ■Auctions in tbe departments, a member of the Executive made the following statement: — I insisted on the point that the reductions were in obedience to the order of the Council. His Honor, convulsively clutching the back of a chair, exclaimed, "I shall not permit, it if God Almighty ordered it.": — (Sensation). The Charleston Herald says : — " Some . very fine quality of coal has recently been struck at the mine belonging to Mr. Behan of this town. The coal is, without doubt, equal to any we have seen on the coast, |and would command a fair price in any market. Masters of vessels are now opening their eyes to the chance they have of making money by taking it to other ports as return freight. The Mary Louisa and others have recently taken on board 40 tons which, we are informed, can be placed on board at 12s. 6d. per ton, exactly one-half that which is charged at G-reymouth." Telegrams from Napier report that Te Kooti is at Lake JRotoaira, in the Taupo district. He is being watched by a party of friendly natives. Reinforcements of native allies were to start uuder orders of Government. Later advices state thnt according to information received through Paora Hap:, Te Kooti is at present between Kunanga and Tupa hararu, with 300 men ; but it ls difficult to arrive at the exact truth. A quartz reef containing gold is reported lo have been discovered at Kaiamania, about fifty-five miles from Napier. Colonel M'Donnell claims the reward. A Royal Commission lias beenappoiuted to inquire into the state of the law affecting building and laud societies.. A Young Couple were married in Christchurch last week whose ages combined amount of 148 years. The bride was 73, and the bridegroona 75 years of age. According to the Star, the ladies of Dunedin have adopted the graces of the " Grecian Bend " so fashionably amongst the London monde some time ago, if not still. In New York it is called the " Yankee kink."
The population of the colony of Victoria is estimated at 684,326, being an increase of 24,429 only during the year; while the net gain by immigration was no more than 7353. At the end of 1868 there were iu Victoria sixty-two towns and boroughs, and one hundred and one shires and road districts. The population of the city and suburbs of Melbourne is estimated at 139,916 souls.
