The English Mail. — The mail for I Europe and India will close at the Postoffice to-night, for letters at eight, and newspapers at seven o'clock. Resident Magistrate's Court — The only case heard yesterday, was that of Nation $ J7uckie v. DencTker for £9 subscription to Colonist newspaper. Judgment was given for plaintiffs for £6 12s 6d ancl costs £1 3s. The late Mr. Gapper. — We are requested to state that the funeral of the late Mr. Gapper will leave his late residence at half-past one to-morrow afternoon, instead of 3 o'clock as previously advertised. I Football. — Neither the Town Club | nor the College boys being satisfied with the result of Saturday's play, auother match was arranged for yesterday, which accordingly took place and has left matters in as unsatisfactory a state as ever, neither side having succeeded in making a goal, although they did their very utmest from three o'clock until it became too dark to see the ball. Scientific Association. — A meeting of this Association was held last night when Dr. "Williams read a most able and interesting paper on the manufacture of flax from which we hope to publish copious extracts to-morrow. ACCIDENT. — A serious accident occurred yesterday to Mr. James Harford, who, in returning to the Waimea, was driving up Franklin-street where there is an enormous mudhole, which it was almost impossible to steer clear of, the consequence being that one wheel got into the hole, and the trap which contained Mr. Harford, his daughter, and her son, was capsized, the two latter fortunately escaping without much injury, Mr. Harford, however, we regret to say, sustained a partial dislocation of the shoulder. We learn that the ground opened by Mees and party, on Rochforfc Terrace, in this neighborhood, has been proved forty feet wide, with four feet of wash-dirt capable of paying good wages. — Westport Times. The discovery of a quartz reef fifteen miles long, and a portion of which is known to be auriferous, is reported on the authority of the Oamaru Times. A Stock Exchange is about to be erected at Shortland, at a cost of £1200. * Madame Duret and Mr. Le Roy, dramatists, have arrived at Auckland, and are shortly expected to make a tour through the provinces. Mr. Bartlett, late 'proprietor of the Duke of Edinburgh Theatre, in Hokitika, has undertaken to make a tour through I tbe provinces of New Zealand with Mr. Talbot, the eminent tragedian. As an indication of the healthy state of things existing in Greymouth, the Star mentious that more than thirty new buildings, principally dwellings, are in course of erection there. These are irrespective of those being erected on the block destroyed by fire. It is said that the steel melted at Taranaki is worth £40 a ton, and ifc can besent home f£r £10. A company has been formed, and shares are in demand. A Brisbane telegram reports the discovery of coal near Allora, which is represented to be equal to Newcastle coal. At a banquet recently given at Auckland to Count de la Ronciere, the representative of Franca in Tahiti, the first toast of the evening was "his Imperial Majesty the Emperor- of tbe French," ■which gave offence to one gentleman present, who demanded that her Majesty's health should take precedence, and on this.not been complied with, he left the room. - Otherwise the evening passed off pleasantly,
