Mr. George Cotterell's Entertainment. — At no entertainment in Nelson do we ever remember to have seen so crowded nnd enthusiastic an audience as that which greeted Mr. Cotterell ou bis first appearance in public last evening. Tho plot, if we may so call it, of the entertainment was that Mr. Cotterell, being prevented from keeping his engagement, had requested his friend Adolphus Boosher, Esq., to keep his audience amused. Mr. Bnosher, a gentleman possessed of a large amount of self-confidence, williDgly undertakes the task, and commences with songs from his own Opera of Humbugiana and in this, Mi* Cotterell alias Adolphus Boosher fairly brought down the House. The next song was entitled "Whakawhakawhak, an Anglo -Maori song," in which the performer, by the inimitable manner in which he took off the Maoris in their singing, showed that he was an adept in the art of mimicry. The following song "The Nelson Ladies" struck us as being weak and ineffective, and we would suggest the propriety of omitting it from the programme of Mr. Cotterell's next entertainment. Of the Mesmeric Carricature we spoke the other day and we need only say that we see no reason to withdraw the encomiums we then pronounced upon it. "Professor Fidget" the University Lecturer ou signs and symbols, was a decidedly clever piece of acting and the musical medley of " Beauty and the Beast" called forth the most rapturous applause. This concluded the first partaud after an interval of 10 minutes, Mr. Boosher re-appeared in his dressing gowu and slippers, and proceed to discourse on "reposeand concentration." The discourse, however, appeared to be a little too hurried, and the repose of the lecturer was evidently disturbed by an anxiety to dash off into a capital local soug, entitled " The New Chum's Lament," which was well received by the audience. The Wedding Breakfast Speeches elicited shouts of laughter, and the rapid changes, from the pompous parson to the painfully shy bridegroom, and from that again to the rollicking Captain Founder the " best man," were thoroughly appreciated. But it is impossible in the limited space at our command to describe the different characters which Mr. Cotterell so cleverly impersonated. We do not for one moment pretend to say that he is equal to such practised performers as John Parry, W. S. Woodin, or German Reed, but we should be inclined to question whether either of those gentlemen on their first appearance on the stage, showed to greater advantage than did Mr. Cotterell last evening. As a novice, he of course, had many difficulties to contend against, but on the other hand, there was a freshness, a naturalness, and an entire freedom from anything approaching to stage tricks, which to a great extent, atoned for the want of experience. It frequently occurs that in entertainments of this description, the characters are embodied with a greater regard to individual completeness of costume, than to distinctive pecularities of manner; this fault is certainly not to be found with Mr. Cotterell, with whom the dress is merely a secondary consideration, he being, apparently, so wrapped up in the impersonation of the character he has undertaken to delineate as to err rather ia the other direction, and he will possibly find as he gathers experience that a little more attention to costume will tend to increase his popularity as an actor. We sincerely trust that Mr. Cotterell will shortly give another entertainment; he may fairly reckon- on another . crowded house, for we feel certain . that all who were pre°ent last night are agreed that in him there is every promise of an actor of first-rate excellence, and the only regret
we hear expressed on all sides is -that a gentleman of his undoubted talent should, for so long a time, have been content to ( hide his light under a bushel. Rifle Shooting. — Intending competitors for Lieut. Hunter Brown's Snider carbine are reminded that the shooting is fixed for ten o'clock to-morrow (Thursday) morning. Conditions of competition may be seeu iv the Order Book of the City Artillery Company, at the Orderly Room.
