NELSON RACES, 1869.
, . Stewards : A. J. Richmond, Esq. lion. Major Mouse. A. Greenfield, Esq. 11. Kichardsox, Esq. Judge: Hon. T. Renwick. SECOND DAY. Although the attendance at tho course to day was of course not so large as on the previous day, there was a far larger number of people than we expected to see. A long line of carriages was drawn up on the side opposite to the stand, while on the same side a large crowd was to be seen during the timo the races were being run. The weather, which had looked somewhat doubtful on the previous evening, h:ui thoroughly cleared, and the day was iovely, we caunot better describe it, perhaps, than by saying — it was perfect Nelson weather. Considerable interest was displayed as to the result of the race for the Turf Club Plate, for which all the horses had been scratched except Peeress and Magenta, and there was a great diversity of opinion on their respective merits. On stripping, Magenta certainly showed a higher state of training than Ivis opponent, but she, on the other liaad, is such a mugniu'eieut animal, and displays so great muscular power, that she found not a few backers who were perfectly content to trust their money on her at even. Shortly .after twelve the tsvo walked to the appointed starting place for The Ttnir Club Plat?, of 100 so vs.; second horse to save his stake. For three-year-olds, - 7 st. lOlbs.; four, Sst. 321b5.; five, 9st. 4lbs. ; six and aged, Sst. 9lbs.; 3lbs allowed to marej and geldings. Entrance, Bso vs. Two miles. Mr Stafford's ch g.Mageuta 1 Mr Redwood's ch f Peeress 2 Peeress lost ground considerably at the start, which she did uot recover for a long time. The two passed the stand for the first time hard held, Magenta some' three lengths in advance This order was preserved until reaching the dip, when Peeress gradually forged ahead, until she had reduced the distance between them to one length, and on turning the last corner, a splendid race ensued between the two, both being ridden hard, Peeress gradually gaining on the gelding, who just contrived to put his head in before her, thus winning the most closely contested race of the meeting. Time 3 rain. 57 sees. The Handicap Steeplechase, of 40 sovs.j second horse to save his etake. Over about two miles of fair hunting country. Entrance, 6 sovg. each, 3 sovs. ft. Mr Sellon's ch ra Quicksilver .., X Mr Richardson's br g Gamester... 2 The horses started well together, Quicksilver and. Gamester having a slight lead at the first leap, which they took together,
the others baulking, and Bones altogether refusing to fake it for some minutes, when his rider gave up the race as hopeless. At the second leap Gamester and Quicksilver were still in advance, Subaltern ftilliug, and causing the distressing accident, an account of which will be found elsewhere. Sea King now came up and took the lead, which however, he soon esigueJ, as he obstinately refused to take a leap, which the others cleared, thus -leaving Gamester and Quicksilver to themselves. Shortly after, Gamester baulked, and Quicksilver took a strong lead of at least 100 yards, after which no interest whatever was attached to the race, (ho mare having it all her own way to the winning post. The Hack Race of 5 sovs. Entrance lCs, each. Catch weights. Once round. Four started. Won by Mr. Page's Rainbow. The Fxiee Handicap, of 40 sovs. Acceptors, 3 sovs. each. One mile and three-quarters. Time, 3 win., 57 sees. Match between Messrs Eed wood's and Stafford's horses. Mr Stafford's ch fLacenfeed 1 Mr Ucd wood's ch fPeeres3 ........ 2 A splendid race won by Lacenfeed by half a length.
