Colonel Whit more's recent successes in the JNorth have worked a -wonderful change in the tone of the Wanganui papers. The Chronicle, siuce his victory at Ngatapa, has warmly supported his mode o'c conducting operations. The Eve7iing Herald, when Colonel Whitmore returned from the West Coast, abused him in the most violent terms; but according to our telegraphic despatch yesterday, that journal is of opinion that the recent attack "was planned with consummate skill, and carried out without a single mistake." — West Coast Times. The anxiety on the score of the peremptory orders dispatched for the return of the 18th Regiment from New Zealand in the Himalaya, may be now set at rest. Although the Himalaya will touch at New Zealand, it is not probable that this regiment will be permitted to embark. On the other hand, it cannot be conceived that she wili be permitted to return from the Antipodes without a freight, and consequently we may expect that the 50th Regiment will be embarked at Sydney in due course, and reach this country at the time expected. If, therefore, the state of affairs in JNew Zealand should imperatively call for additional troops, the 14th may possibly be despatched from Australia upon ihe judgment of the local authorities. We sincei eiy hope that this will be the extent of the assistance weeded; but should it be otherwise, it would be better that our transports should steam half way across thi-» globe empty than that the lives of our settk-rs in New Zealand shculd be sacrificed. — Broad Arrow, 23rd Jan.
