CORRESPONDENCE.

To the Editor or ihe Nelson Evening Mail. Sir — Now that little doubt exists as to the presence of his Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh being vouchsafed to us here in '■ Sleepy Hollow," it is high time that some brain should throw out an idea for the benefit of the needy — aye and not only for the needy but for what are now known as Cosmopolitans — a free public table in one of the streets of Nelson. Can I get you to think, Mr Editor, that our well-beloved Duke would be ten times more pleased by seeing a public table spread through one of the leading streets of Nelson (say Trafalgar-street) than he will be, by any ball that can be improvised here ! What will be the cost, say some ? Your correspondent knows of a person who will provide everything necessary for 3000 persons for £1000 and have five arches erei-ted across Trafalgar-street, besides other floral decorations. Where is the £1000 to come from? say most people. My answer is, let those who have 'he wealth in Nelson, and who have earned it here (say two or three that I could name) put their heads together the same as your correspondent and four others did in Melbourne when they entertained the Governor and Legislative Council at a public banquet. I Some £750 was raised between five of us. Yours &c, Officitjm. [If, as our correspondent seems to think, four or five persons, by laying their heads together, could place £750 at the disposal of the Reception Committee, by all means, we say, let them perform the necessary operation without delay. — Ed. NE.M.]
