We believe that instructions have been received from the Provincial Government for the presence at Nelson of Inspector Franklyn and several of the Goldfields Police Force during the visit of His Koyal Highness Prince Alfred. — Westport ' Times.
The Duke of Edinburgh's Visit — The following telegram has been received by His Honor the Superintendent from the Colonial Secretary : Governmentfinds it cannot undertake to send carriages and horses to Nelson. Cannot calculate on steamer going in time. Same carriage which you have prepared for his reception from Port to Town will do at other times. Governor will also occupy it. Suite will require another. G-alatea cannot enter harbor, so if she goes to Nelson you will require to have small steamer for Duke to land in. Unless there was one, he would probably go in the Blanche. Illuminations. — We are glad to find that many of the shops and hotels are to be illuminated during the eveuings when the Prince is in Nelson. The expense attaching to these illuminations is so small that we hope to see it generally adopted in the town. Transparencies of any desigu framed to fit shop fronts or other windows are procurable from MrLouisson for the very moderate sum of from 10s. to £2 each, and we understand that he has already received several orders. Accident at the Wharf. — As Thos. Lloyd, a boy of about 12 years of age, was crossing from the steamer Kenuedy to the wharf this morning, the steamer gave a sudden lurch, when the bridge slipped, and the boy fell into the water, whence he was rescued by one of the steamer's hands, who immediately jumped overboard and held him up until assistance was received from the wharf. Advance New Zealand. — We hear of a wonderful instance of prolificness at Brighton. A few days ago a woman living in that township, and usually known as " Nelly the Washerwoman," gave birth to four children ! Of this " family party," however, only one survives, three having since died. Ancient Order of Foresters. — The anniversary of the Court Perseverance A.O.F. was celebrated at Motueka on Tuesday last wheu a goodly muster of the brethren formed in procession at their Court Room in the morning, and marched thence through the principal streets of the district to the race course, where they disbanded and devoted themselves for the time being to the amusements there provided for them. In the evening a party of the brethren and their friends, to the number of about 60, sat down to an excellent dinner provided for them at the Motueka Hotel by Host Daly, when the chair was taken by Captain Fearon an4 the vice chair by P. D. S. Lane. After the cloth was removed the usual toasts were proposed and heartily responded to, many capital songs were sung, and there was a general expression of regret when it was announced that the visitors from Nelson were compelled to leave, in order to be in time for the sailing of the Lady Barkly. Important from the West Coast. — The JVestport Times thus chronicles an event which has taken place on the West Coast : — Good Friday, a.d. 1869, will live long in the memory of " thirsty souls " in the Buller district, for there will be associated with that day one pleasing reminiscence, suggestive at once of the extension of liberal sentiments, and of the district's advance from its primitive stage of barbarism aud beer to a higher and purer period of civilisation and spirituous liquors. On that day, and probably on the principle of " the better day the better deed," the hotel-keepers and publicans of Westport, after much consultation, and, no doubt, mature deliberation, reduced the price of the indispensable " nobler" to the small charge of one sixpence ! Compared with it, such incidents as the presence or preachings of the. Bishop of Nelson, or the vexed question of Separation, are, for the time, nowhere. Appointments. — In the Gazette of the 25th inst. we notice that His Excellency has been pleased to appoint J. H, Lowe Esq. Returning Officer for the Grey District, Registrar of Births, Marriages, and Deaths, for the district of Cobden, Resident Magistrate for the district of Nelson South West Goldfi elds, and a Justice of the Peace for the Colony of New Zealand.
