The Nelson Evening Mail. WEDNESDAY, MARCH 31, 1869. TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE.
MONSTER MEETINGS IN HAWKE'S BAY. Wellington, March 31, 12.5 p.m. The Evening Post has received the following telegrams: — Large public meetings have been held at Napier. Meanee. and Waipukurau, at which memorials to the Governor were unanimously adopted expressing the regret and alarm felt by the inhabitants of Hawke's Bay at the withdrawal of Mr M'Lean from authority as Government agent. They say that the efforts of the present ministry have failed to secure peace, and that a feeliug of general insecurity prevails, aud they recommend His Excellency to procure advisers who possess the confidence of the people. The spread of the rebellion is said to be entirely owing to the present unwise and inefficient administration of affairs, and it is urged that no hopes of an amelioration of the present deplorable condition can be entertained so long as the present Ministry is in power. His Excellency is therefore advised to call the Assembly together without delay. A large number of influential Native Chiefs have called on Mr M'Lean and expressed their regret and sorrow at the treatment he has received at the hands of tbe Government.
