Militia Dkilltng in Wellington. — The First-class Militia have been undergoing training for three months, and are now considered sufficiently advanced to enter on battalion drill. The Second-class Militia are, it is stated, likewise to undergo training, and in due time -they will no
doubt be fit to take up the battalion drill also. On behalf of the people of this district, we enter the strongest possible protest against any such piece of folly being put into execution. What do the Militia want with battalion drill ? What do they want with anything else than the mere rudimentary portions of the drill of European soldiers ? If the Militia are called out for mere pastime, or for the mere appearance of the tiling, they may just as well exercise battalion drill as any other. If they are called out merely for review purposes ; if in fact they are called out for any other purpose than to be of service against the rebels, battalion drill will serve to fill up the daily hour, and when the Prince comes we Avill duly record the steadiness with which they inarch past, and give half a column of credit to the gallant this and the gallant that, who have had the management of it all. — Evening Post.
