Exports, 1868, £3,944,035; Imports, 1868, £22,256,926; leaving a balance iv I favor of Russia of nearly eighteeu millions of money in one year. Of the imports the following are tho maiu articles, with their cost : — I Flax and hemp, undressed and dressed, ! £4,055,315 ; flax seed and linseed, £2,241,958 ; corn (principally- wheat), £11,461,629; tallow, £1,395,680; timber, £1,684,206 ; the balance is made up of tar, wool, bristles, &c. Some of this enormous annual sum (£18,000,000) could surely find its way into New Zealand under a different system ; or if the merchants and manufacturers at home willed, could create a demand for colonial produce instead of supporting the most barbaric empire in the world, ;aul assisting her in trampling down humanity wherever it stays its way to universal empire.
