In the Far West, as elsewhere, there are legislators who are not too much in earnest. I recommend to some of our present candidates for British suffrages the following noble close to a Far Western election address: —'Gentlemen,' said the candidate, after having given sentiments ontheconstitootion, the 'Monroe doctrine,' and such like topics,- '• gentlemen,' and he put his hand on the region of his heart, * these are my sentiments —the sentiments, gentlemen, of a honest man —ay, a honest politician', but, gentlemen and fellow citizens, if they dont suit you, they can be altered V —American paper. At Rochester, New York, a woman named Mary Swingler has just been sentenced to six months' imprisonment for cruelty to her adopted daughter seven years of age. The woman had burnt the child's hands by forcibly holding them over a cooking stove until neighbors interfered* The woman's reason was.that the child had stolen a piece of candy, and 4 .he intended to give her an idea of what feellifi.' . .
