AUCKLAND.
We have received our Auckland files to 30th ult. There is little news of importance excepting the continued progression of the Thames Goldfields where the yield of gold appears to be steadily increasing: — • 'About 12 p.m. on Wednesday, a destructive fire occurred at Epsom, by which a three-roomed house, a stable, and the valuable racehorse Statellite, belonging to 'Mr Chadwick, were destroyed. The premises were in the occupation of Mr William Mears, and are situated near Onetree Hill. Before assistance could be procured the fire spread to the coach-house and to a three-roomed cottage contiguous, which were soon burned dowDj and also, which is perhaps the most serious loss of all, the racehorse Satellite, which was in
the stable at the time, and was valued by her owner at a thousand pounds. We understand that the property was uninsured, and the origin of the fire is at present involved in mystery. — Express* Through the kindness of an esteemed correspondent, we are in a position to state that the total number of machines at pre* seat erected at Shortland, ia course of erection, or ordered from local or other manufacturers, amounts to forty-seven, driving no less than five hundred and six stamps. This certainly speaks well for the permanence of our goldfield*— Weekly News. We very much regret to have to announce that Alex* Kennedy, Esq., Ma* nager of the Bank of New Zealand, In Auckland, has, owing to private pecuniary difficulties, been compelled to resign .his office.— Weekly News* A sad accident occurred t& Captain Corbett, of Taranaki, at Auckland, a few. days ago, on board a small steamer. While engaged in casting off from the wharf, the rope caught his foot, and pulled it completely off; his sufferings were said to be terrible.
