The Nelson Evening Mail. THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 1869.

The Aurora Au. tralis was plainly visible last night, between tbe hours of nine and ten, the long luminous rajs, which now and again shot up with marvellous rapidity, presenting a very beautiful appearance. We understand that an agitation is being got up in Nelson in favor of the system of votiug by ballot. A meeting of those favorable to the scheme is called for to-morrow night, at Mr Clements' Store, Bridge-street. We beg to call the attention of our readers to tbe concert and tea-party to be given to-morrow, at Waimea West, iv aid . of the building fund of St. Michael's Church. ' The stables of Dr Cotterell, in Waimeastreet were last night broken into, and a quantity of hay stolen therefrom. We understand that this is not the first occasion on which such liberties have been taken with that gentleman's property, but as the police are now on the look out, either the hay will be more safe for the future, or the thief will have to pay the penalty of his crime. An offence of a similar nature was committed on the day of the Foresters' Fete, at the house of Captain Whitwell, in the Wood, which was entered by a window, tha intruder however, after rumaging about and disturbing the furniture, &c, seems to have found no valuables that he could conveniently carry, and consequently left the house without taking anything. The Barque John Knox, JeDkins master, 11 days out from Syduey, arrived at the outer anchorage on Tuesday, and hauled alongside the wharf last evening. She brings a general cargo consigned to Messrs N. Edwards & Co.
