An inquest was held yesterday afternoon at the Post-boy Hotel, before ' Dr Squires, District Coroner, touching the death of Emma Fletcher Bartlett. The jury proceeded to view the body, and on their return, the following evidence was taken : — Mary Elizabeth Bartlett, deposed: I. am wife of Robert Henry Bartlett, carpenter, living in West Bank Terrace. The body the jury have just viewed, is the body of my child, Emma Fletcher Bartlett, aged 16 months. On Saturday afternoon last, a little after 5 o'clock, I had poured out some water and washed up the tea-things, I then went to the other end of the table for a cloth, out of the drawer, when deceased pulled the table-cloth, got hold of the basin of hot water and tipped it over her. I took her into a neighbor's, — Mrs Hill's, — who put a plaister of butter and flour over the scald. I then sent for Dr Scaly, and he attended her till she died this morning. Wtn, Byass Scaly, deposed: lam a duly qualified medical practitioner, residing in Nelson. I identify the body as that of Emma Fletcher Bartlett. On Saturday last I was called in to her, I found she had been scalded all over the chest, and the upper part of the abdomen, and under the right armpit. I attended her until she died, this morniag. Convulsions set in yesterday, and she sank under them. The cause of death was the convulsions caused by the irritation produced by the scald.
