DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT TIMARIL The following telegram was forwarded to us last night from the office of the* Lyttelton Times at Christen urcb., aud was published as an Extra this moruinar. We learn that the town of Timaru consisted of one long street, facing the sea, in which - the various premises enumerated below were situated, and the fire seems to have spared only a very insignificant portion of the town. Christchurch, Dec. 8, 5.27. p.m. Yesterdjiy afternoon, at. about 3 o'clock, a fire broke out in Mr Monro's premises, at the north eud of Tiraaru. A strong north-wester was blowing at the time, atid the fire burned furiously until half-past 6, destroying all the principal buildings of the town. Amongst others may ba named — the premises of Mouro's furniture warehouse; Knight, painter; Wood, saddler; Solomon, draper; Seymour, watchmaker; Jacobs, watchmaker; Erskine, grocer; Watkius, chemist; Clarksou aud TurnbuM, general storekeepers; Beldy, barber; Butler, chemist; Horton aud Belfield, office of the Timaru "Herald; Bilton, bookseller; Byrne, private residence; Stubbs and King, butchers' shop and residenoe; Morgau," baker; Mouutford, photographer; Melton Stables and residence ; Fraser, butcher ; Pogijuisky, barber; M'Rae, Club Hotel ; Stubbs aud King, butchers' shop No 2 ; Postoffice, Telegraphoffice, Bauk of New Zealand. No lives have been lost as far' as has yet been ascertained, but very little property has been saved.
