The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1868. PANAMA MAIL. BY ELECTRIC TELEGRAPH.
Wellington, November 21, 10 a.m. The s.s. Mataura arrived in harbor at 9 this morning. She left Panama on the 21st of October, arrived at Opara on the Bth inst., and left on the 10th. On the 24th October, William Johnson, a fireman, fell from the railing into the sea, and was not missed until it was too late to save him. When leaving Opara, J. Smith, a seaman, fell overboard from the forecastle, and every effort made to save him proved unavailing. On the 10th instant the Mataura's engines were stopped for 24 hours, through an accident to the machinery.
She brings the following passengers: — for Wellington — the Hon. G-. M. Waterhouse, Mr and Mrs Cowper and Mr J. Harding. For Nelson — Mr and Mrs R. J. Creasy, Mrs Weitzel, and Mrs Finney and child. For Hokitika — Mr and Mrs De Quadri, Miss M. Hollywood, and Messrs. Bernard and Goldagly. For Auckland— Capt. 0. N. Eivett, Mr G. W. Williams and Mr Conroy. For Otago— Mrs Jackson, Mr and Mrs Cuthbert and Mr Morgan. For Melbourne — Mr and Mrs Peart, Mr and Mrs Ward, Capt. F. A. Baker, Miss E. O'Shannassy, Messrs J. G. Kenyon, J. Howeil, Thomas, Austin, Hogg and G. B. Nye. For SydneyMrs Whitton and family, Mr Austin and children, Mr and Mrs Slatter, Miss A. Blythe, and Messrs Henry (2), M. H. Peppercorn, and Marshall.
