A telegram from Melbourne, dated Oct. :30th, sayst — Capt. Robins of the S. D. Bailey, has been further remanded on a charge of fraud at the instance of the American Consul. His solicitor has entered an action against the superintendent of detectives for detaining £400 found on 'Capt. Robins. The Wellington Post says that a .private letter, dated Apia, 12th September, gives more details of the destruction •caused by the tidal wave on the 15th and 16th August, at Navigator Islands. The miter says the tide rushed on the shore eight different times, sweeping several villages away, with their inhabitants. A s spacious church built of solid materials, was levelled to the ground. A Catholic priest was surprised by the terrible flood whilst visiting a station, and was placed in liruninent danger, having had to climb a tree for refuge, and afterwards to abandon that precarious shelter and ascend a hill. His coat, provisions, sacerdotal vestments, «nd chalice, were carried away at the same time. - A sharp competition appears to have i>een going on of late between the Tasmanian Steam Company and the firm of Robinson and Lilly; the latter the owners of the s.B. Rob Roy ; the former of the Ber went and Tasmania. Fares have been reduced until, as we perceive by our latest exchanges, the T.S.N. Co. take saloon passengers from Melbourne to Launceston for £l (with provisions), and steerage passengers for 7s 6d. At this point Eobinson and Lilly appear to have come to the conclusion that 'discretion is the letter part of valor/ for they advertise the following notice to shippers and passengers :-r-'The s.s. Rob Roy will be laid "iip^tintil the i fares and freights reach a ;: «nore remunerative price.* They conclude 1»y thanking their friends and supporters, ,and tl^st soon to resume tfre trade.
