* Intelligence has arrived of another most disastrous engagement which took place on Saturday last at Okautuku, where Tito Kowaru was encamped. Our force, including 350 Europeans, and about the same number of natives, led by Colonel Whitmore himself, attacked and nearly got possession of the pa, when large reinforcements came to the assistance of the rebels, and our troops were compelled to retire in good order, carrying with them all who were known to have been wounded. Major Hunter was dangerously wounded whilst gallantly leading on the storming party, aud died whilst being carried to tbe rear on a stretcher. 7 were killed, and 21 wounded, who were carried off tbe field. 12 of our men are also said to be missing. The attack commenced at 8 a.m., and continued until half-past 1 p.m. The retiring force were followed by the rebels to within a short distance from the redoubt at Wereroa. Colonel Whitmore was to make a second attack on 'the pa on Sunday morning.
