On the French steamer which left the Bosphorus for Salonica a short time since -was a party of 100 Albanians, and these gentry informed the captain that he must notcall at Mount Athos, but proceed direct -to Salonica. On his refusal they drew pistols and knives and threatened a general >massacre if their wishes were not complied -with. The captain in his turn got out the •hose, and threatened to pump hot water over them if they did not lay down their arms. A parley then ensued, which resulted in the captain gaining his point, and calling at Mount Athos. It is stated in a New York letter that, in a recent sculling match on the Schuylkill, one of the boats used was made of ,paper, and constructed upon an American patent. The boat weighs 271 b., and is 35 feet long and 10 inches wide. Dr Johnson used to say that a habit of looking on the best side of every event is better than a thousand pounds a year. Josh Billings, in his advice to a young lady as to how she should receive a proposal, says: —You ought tew take it kind, looking down hill with an expression ■about half tickled and half scart. After -the pop is over, if your luvyer wants tew kiss you, I don't think I would say yes or no, but let the thing kind of take its own course. (A Man who'll maliciously set fire to a shed/ said Mr Slow, 'and burn up 20 ought to be kicked to death by a donkey—and I'd like to do it myself,* Slow .is very severe sometimes. A miser having relented so much as to -give a beggar a sixpence, suddenly dying -soon after, the attendant physician gave it jlb his opinion it was from enlargement of • rthe heart! •fSusan,' said an Irishman to his fellow•servant, v what are the bells ringing for?' * In honor of the Princess's birthday,' was 4he reply. 'Be easy, jewel/ rejoined Pat, 'none of your tricks upon travellers; 'twas 4he Prince of Wales's on the 9th, and how can it be his sister's twelve days after, unless indade they are twins ?'
