THE PAST SESSION.
We quote from the Independent of the 22nd inst. the following resume of the business done in the House of Representatives during the session which was closed on Tuesday the 20th inst.: — There was 1 writ issued a/ter the session commenced, and 14 during the recess. There were 14 select •Committees on public bills, and 7 standing committees. There were 79 bills which originated in the House ; 29 which werte brought from the Legislative Coun-
cil, and 8 introduced by Message. 36 bills received the Royal assent during the session, and 45 on the day Parliament was prorogued. 45 bills which had been introduced were either dropped or rejected. None of the bills passed have been reserved for her Majesty's assent. There were no private bills introduced during the session. There were 97 petitions received relating principally to private grievances. The House met 62 times, and sat 466 hours, 29 of these being after midnight. The average number of hours was 7 hours and 45 miuutes, being a near approach to that 8 hour system, which has been adopted by less exalted classes in the colony. The House n .ver once had to adjourn for want oi* a quorum. There were 284 notices of motiou given, and 78 orders for papers. There were 109 papers laid on the table by command of his Excellency, and 52 in return of orders. There were 71 papers ordered to be printed, and 97 that did not receive this distinction. There were in all 132 reports from select •committees. From these facts the public will gather that the House has been pretty well occupied during the session, but we trust that we cannot say of the work of our members, ' that Satan fiuds some mischief still for idle hands to do.' They got through an immense amount of business, but whether of a useful or useless kind, we have not the means of determining. The most important information has not yet however been furnished to the public, and that is the amount of money which all this work costs the colony.
