Feb. 23 At an extraordinary general meeting of -the shareholders of the New Zealand Navigation Company, held at Wellington on Tuesday last, it was decided by alarge majority that the steamer Taranaki, now lying sunk in Bowdeu Bay, Tory Channel, should be sold as she lies, rather than make any attempt to raise her. This decision was arrived at in accordance with the recommendation of Mr Woodward and the inspectors. Several tenders were received for raising the vessel, the adoption of one of which, by Messrs Carter & Brown for £4000, was recommended by the surveyors, Mr Balfour and Mr Johnson, of the Marine Board. A young lady, talking about the everyvarying female fashions said, 'Of course, its only women of mean3 who can follow them.' A person who happened to be present observed, 'Or rather, Miss, women of extremes.' ' What blessings children are,' as the parish clerk said when he took the fee for christening them. Lessing, the German philosopher, being absent-minded, knocked at his own door one evening, when the servant, looking out of the window, and not recognising jiim, said, ' The professor is not at home.' * Oh, very well,' said Lessiug, composediy, walking away, 'I'll call another time.' Why is a conscientious baker like a ship -without ballast ? — Because, being short of weight, he gives a roll. ' Wherever you find many men you will find many minds,-' exclaimed a public speaker. *It ain't so, by jingo,' responded one of his auditors; 'if you'd only ask this whole crowd to take a drink, you'd find 'em all of one mind.' The lecturer 'caved* without trying the experiment.
