The Independauee Beige publishes a letter from a merchant of Galata, containing a very curious narration, namely, that the Italian brig San Gennaro having lately been becalmed in its course from Naples to Odessa in the waters of the Greek Archipelago, the crew engaged in fishing. The head cook, who was efxpert in the art, had already sncceeded in spearing several fine tunnies, when he struck his harpoon into the body of an enormous sword fish, which after a time whs hauled on deck with much labour. The ivory sword was four feet long, and the total length from its point to the end of the tail not less than 15 feet. But great was the astonishment of the crew when the carpenter, in cutting open the body, discovered in the stomach a moderate-sized box, stamped with a cross and star, the emblems of Turkey, and bearing these words in French, 'Poste locale.' It was a Constantinople letter-box containing nearly 30 letters which the captain took charge of with a view to a punctual delivery. Great excitement has been produced at • Marseilles by threatening letters sent to some of the principal inhabitants, demanding sums of 25,000 francs from each. One of the persons having paid no attention to the missive, received a few days later a parcel which had been left at his house by a stranger. The packet proved to be a volume entitled '. ; La Vie de Gerson,' and the merchant, who had some suspicions, having carefully raised the corners of some of the leaves, found that the middle of the book had been scooped our, and the space filled with detonating powder, arranged with chemical matches and sand paper in such a manner that, on the book being . opened suddenly and forcibly, an explosion should take place. He shook out the powder, and was thus able to examine the new. kind of infernal machine withont danger. Ail the letters sent bear the signature of Bandolini. King Alfred, when he burnt the cakes, didn't.save;his baking. Friends are the most often like the negro's moon— '* Nebber shine dark nights.'
