It is also believed that Topia, the son of the arch-rebel Pehi was co-operating with Tito Kowaru, and would make Pipiriki the basis of his operations, so as to concentrate the two forces at any moment on atiy particular point. Immediately on receipt of this intelligence, Col. M'Donnell went over to Putiki, and having assembled the chiefs and leading: men, communicated the intelligence to them. Mounted messengers were at once dispatched to Turakina, Rangatikei and Manawatu, and also up the Wanganui River, and to all places where the Maoris belonging to the Wanganui tribes were located. At 9 o'clock this morning the chiefs and their men assembled in front of tbe Militia Office for the purpose of receiving back tbe arras and ammunition which they had delivered up only a few days before.
