Guinness went over to Ireland as the , servant of a Dean of St. Patrick's, not i Dean Swift, but a gentleman who took' great delight in chemical experiments, and was a first-rate amateur brewer. When. he died he left all his 'plant' to his servant, who started in a very small way Ht James's Gate, in Dublin. He was fortunate in finding on his premises a well of marvellously suited water, and thus i commenced that immense trade which now reaches to the remotest corners of the world.. The prosperity of the firm i only reached its climax when the beer began to be patronised in England, but once John Bull's pocket was tapped, the gains became and continued to be almost incredible. It is said that the film has a quarter of a million sunk in eihpty casks*
