The Sydney Morning Herald of the 2np inst. states that a telegram had been received iv Sydney, to the effect that Mr Eyre, late Governor of Jamaica, is appointed Governor of South Australia, in the room of the late Sir Dominic Daly. A game of chess by telegraph has been commenced between Melbourne and Adelaide. It is expected there will be a similar game with Sydney. The case of the Bank of Van Diemen's Laud v. the Bank of Victoria, for dishonoring a bill and retaining an undue time, has been decided ; the verdict was for the defendant on the first count, and for the plaintiff on the second count, damages £3000. In the Melbourne Divorce Court, one Wade lately sought and obtained a dissolution of marriage with his second wife, on the ground on her being the sister of his first wife deceased. At a meeting of the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce, recently held, a resolution was passed expressing an opinion that additional postal intercourse with the mother country can be best obtained by the establishment of a line of first-class steamers via the Cape of Good Hope, adapted for the conveyance of passengers of all classes ; and that to promote such additional intercourse, tbe Government be requested to give the necessary subsidy in the shape of a bonus on third-class parsengers. A chemical {experiment involving important sanitary results has been tried ia Melbourne —namely, the use of carbolic acid as a disinfectant. The results proved highly satisfactory. For the first time since the formation of theold East India Company's European regiments some centuries past, and now amalgamated N with the line, one battalion, viz., the 101stj. y or Royal Bengal Fusiliers, are tn tbeir way home to England, and wili take a tour of duty through the United Kingdom. This indulgence, if such it can be called, in bringing regiments from hot to cold climates, will go right through the old' European, regiments of Inula «very year according to seniority.
