A fact has been reported by Captain Fox, of the steamer St. Kilda, wbich is interesting, and may prove to be important to those connected with navigation. It appears that, whilst at the Chatham Islands lately iu the Stormbird, he was shown some telegraph posts with the Kew Zealand Government mark on them, and a gate which had been drifted from the Middle Island to the Chathams, a distance of exactly 400 miles in an easterly direction. Some of the posts were known to have been carried out to sea sometime in February last from Amuri. — Westport Star, August 24. The Argus of the 21st, states that the "tidal wave, observed at Sydney and New castle, was also noticed at Hobart Town, and was probably connected with the - eame tidal commotion which has taken place on the coasts of this colony. The new reservoir, for the water supply of Adelaide, is to be made capable of containing 900,000,000 gallons, and is to be -constructed at an estimated cost of £75,000. rf In the great cricket match at Lord's •between the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge, the latter was victorious by -168 runß. Why should physicians have a greater horror of the sea than anybody else ? — Because they are more liable to see sickness. Thackeray being told that an acquaintance of his, who was notorious for his 'love of beer, had sailed for India, replied, ■*he was a good fellow. Take him for &alf and half, we shall not look upon his -like again.' A very fat lady, on getting into an -omnibus, heard a gentleman make the grumbling remark, * omnibuses were not made for elephants.' To this she replied, "* Sir, omnibuses are like Noah's ark, ic--tended to carry air sorts of beasts.' It is a common saying that the lower -.order of animals have not the vices of man, yet it is certain that some of the iosectS/are backbiters, and all the quadrupeds are talebearers.
