In order to ascertain if the meat was properly done, he cut off a piece and put it into his month. Instead of masticating it, he endeavored to swallow it, but the passage of the meat was obstructed, and it remained in a dangerous position in the throat Some persons who were standing by endeavored by artificial means to force the meat down the throat, but without success. Doctor Alexander waa instantly in attendance, but being without a pair of forceps, he was unable to extract the meat. The man died a few minutes afterwards. Doctor Alexander subsequently succeeded in removing the piece of meat, which was of very considerable size, and weighed 3 ounces. Negotiations are said to be in progress between the different insurance companies in Auckland, to set on foot a thoroughly efficient fire brigade. The volunteer ays» tem, it appears, has not been found to work well, and it is in consequence proposed to pay the men to be engaged in the new brigade.
