The Nelson Evening Mail. SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 1868. NELSON BOARD OF WORKS.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Board took place yesterday evening at the office. Present, Mr Bentley, M.P.C. in the chair, Messrs R. Burn, M.P.C., D. Burns, Field, Percy, and Webb.

The minutes of the last meeting having been read aud confirmed,

The Finance Committee reported that they had examined the accounts of the late Collector, Mr Watts, and had found them to be correct. It was then resolved that a letter of thanks, for the manner in which he had fulfilled the duties of the office of Collector, should be forwarded to Mr Watts, to be signed by the Chairman on behalf of the Board.

The primary report of the Public Works Committee was brought up by Mr R. Burn, and the various items having been taken into consideration, it was resolved that the following works should be carried out: —

1. If prison labor can be obtained, the road in Trafalgar Square at the South of the Church to be cut down to a proper gradient to Nile Street.

2. Repairs to be done in Nile Street, near the Bishop's School.

3. The gravel to be thrown tip againsfc the wattling in the Brook Street Stream, near Mr Barton's cottages, so as to throw the stream more into the centre, and a weir to be thrown across the stream below the bridge.

4. The footpath to be repaired near the Nile Street Bridge over the Maitai, and the ford on the side of the Bridge to be made good with river gravel.

5. The watertable in Nile Street East to be repaired by contract, from Nile Street Bridge to Mr Huddleston's.

6. Eepairs to be done by contract, in Tory Street and Hardy Street East.

7. Repairs to be carried out in Miltonstreet from Hardy-street to Bridge-street.

8. Milton-street to be continued by contract from Bridge-street to Halifax-street, and from Halifax-street to the Town Boundary on the Suburban North Road.

9. Various repairs to be executed in Grove-street from end to end.

10. The road to be repaired in Cambriastreet, in several places, and a stone drain with grates to be put across the road near Mr Sait's.

It was understood that these works were only the- first instalment of improvements to be carried out by the Board throughout the city, including Washington Valley, Van Diemen's-street, St Vincent-street, the extreme end of the Haven Road, Manuka-street, Murphy-street, &c, &c.

Mr Webb moved that a special meeting should be held for the purpose of receiving tenders for these works, on Friday next, at 4 p.m. The motion was seconded by Mr Percy, and carried.

Mr R. Burn called the attention of the Board to the necessity of watering the public streets, the Government having granted permission to employ the Waterservice for this purpose, and it was resolved that the Chief Clerk be empowered to employ a competent person to water the streets, when necessary.

A letter was read from the Provincial Secretary, stating that the sum of £35 Bs. 3d., had been received from the sale of dogtickets for the first sis months of the current year, and had been paid into the Bank of New Zealand to the credit of the Board.

Mr R Burn made application for the annual subscription of the Board to the Volunteer Fire Brigade, and it was proposed by Mr Webb and seconded by Mr Field that the subscription be £25, which was carried unanimously.

Mr U. Burn moved that the present time of meeting of the Board be changed to half-past 5 p.m. Mr> Webb moved as an amendment that it be changed to 7 p.m., and both being lost, it was then deter-

mined that the present hour should be adhered to.

It was resolved that advertisements should be inserted in the local journals stating that Mr E. Smallbone had been appointed Collector to the Board and Inspector of Nuisances.

Several accounts were passed, and the Board adjourned until Friday next the 21st inst. at 4 p.m.
