TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGENCE.
Wellington, August 10, 9.47 a.m. Intelligence was received from Napier on Saturday, that Colonel Whitmore was following up the escaped prisoners with" a force of 200 men. On the 3rd instant he was about to cross the Haongaroa River, with four days' provisions. The enemy was unable to get into the mountains, on account of the enow which had fallen. Colonel Whitmore's force had divided into two columns, one of which was following the trail of the fugitives, and the other, under Major Fraser, was going by the road, but was encountering great hardships, the snow lyiug a foot deep, but they were in sight of the enemy's fires, and hoped to get hold of them before their provisions ran out. Some of the plunder taken from Captain Westrupp's camp had been recovered. One hundred natives of the Tuparoa tribe were on their way to assist Colonel Whitmore. The number of the escaped prisoners is supposed to have been exaggerated. The departure of the prisoners had removed all fear of disaffection in Poverty Bay.
