The Hawke's Bay Herald states that it is generally understood that Captain Holt has become lessee of the Island of Kawau, and is about to take possession — Sir George Grey purposing shortly to leave the colony for England. The adoption of Wellington time does not appear to find favor in some of the provinces. If any province in the colony has cause for complaint it is Southland ; being at the extreme south of the colony the difference between Wellington and mean time is the greatest, and considerable inconvenience has arisen. His Honor Mr Justise Chapman kept the Supreme Court waiting last week over half an hour. He explained that it was owing to the Supreme Court in Otago having refused to adopt Wellington time. .We find that various places of public worship after trying Wellington time have found it necessary in order to meet the views of the congregations to make the hour for morning service 11.30 instead of 11 o'clock, as before. The inaugural poultry show of the Poultry Association of Canterbury was held on the Ist instant, at Christchurch. It proved a great success. Prizes were given by the judges for the best exhibited specimens of pigeons, canaries, turkeys, ducks and rabbits, and the show was altogether a grand affair. There were ten classes of birds, and 40 prizes in all were distributed. DuriDg the process of the late fire in Rattray-street, Dunedin, the Commissioner of Police authorised the pulling down of the. one-story wood building, which was occupied by Mr M. Levy, pawnbroker, and Mr Hatch, bootmaker. A claim on the Commissioner has been made by Mr Levy for £370, as regards the building, and by Mr Hatch, for £50, for loss in business. The royal yacht Victoria and Alber? was to be ready for service by the Ist of June, when she would take the Prince of Wales and a distinguished party to Nor■yray.
