The Nelson Evening Mail. FRIDAY, AUGUST 7, 1868.
TELEGRAPHIC INTELLIGEIN CE. Wellington,. August 7. 10.54 a.m. The debate on Mr Fox's motion has been again adjourned. The Wanganui Herald says that Ensign Wrey and the Nelson volunteers had left that place for Patea in the steamer Woodpecker. They had not proceeded more than 7 or 8 miies when they, according to the captain's statement, commenced breaking up the cargo. The steamer returned to Wanganui, and the captain reported the affair to Colonel Gorton, who went on board, and induced Wrey and six of the most prominent rioters to accompany him on shore, when Wrey was immediately banded over to the civil power, charged with aiding and abetting in the felony. Lieutenant Gudgeon was then put in charge, and the steamer proceeded to her destination. It seems that the men complained that they had been forced on board without arms, with only one blanket, and several without boots or shoes to their feet. Ensign Wrey was brought before the Resident Magistrate's Court the next day. The case was remanded, bail being accepted for his appearance.
