BRITISH AND FOREIGN BIBLE SOCIETY. NELSON AUXILIARY.
A meeting, having for its object the revival of this society, was held yesterday evening at theSTemperance Hall, and was well attended by members of the various Protestant denominations in this city.
The Right Rev. Bishop Suter, who is also one of the Vice-Presidents of the parent Society ia London, occupied the
chair.
After a hymn 'Jesus shall reign,' and prayer by Rev. P. Calder, and the 19th Psalm had been read by the Rev. C. 0.
Mules, the Bishop introduced the object of the meeting, and the following resolutions, supported by the Rev. G. H. Johnstone, P. Calder, W. M. Biss, and J. Davis, Messrs R. Burn, M.P.C., H. C. Dauiell, Sclanders, T. R. Fisher, and Spear, were unanimously adopted: — 1. That the Nelson Auxiliary of the British and Foreign Bible Society be revived, and that the following be requested to act, or continue to act, if previously appoiuted, in the following capacities : — President, the Bishop of Nelson ; Treasurer, Mr H. C. DanieU; Secretary, Mr H. Drew; Committee, the Ministers of Religion in the neighborhood who are willing to act, and six laymen in addition to the above-named officers — Messrs R. Burn, Garduer, Hill, Campbell, Fisher, and Sclanders, with power to add to their number. 2. That this meeting considers that the work of the British and Foreign Bible Society will not be accomplished till tbe Holy Scriptures are placed in the hands of all' able to read them ; and therefore hails with thankfulness the success which has attended the work of colportage in this colony, and pledges itself to continue that work with renewed vigor both in town and country. 3. That this meeting is thankful for tbe opportunities presented by the British and Foreign Bible Society to Christians, for combined effort to spread the Word of God. 4. That this meeting recognises the duty incumbent upon Christians of circulating the Bible; and therefore pledges itself to renewed efforts to support the British and Foreign Bible Society by collections and subscriptions; and earnestly invites the hearty co-operation of those present to enrol their names as annual subscribers, and as collectors for this auxiliary. Whilst supporting the second resolution, Mr Spear gave a lengthened and interesting narrative of his labors as a 'colporteur in this province. A collection was made at the close of the proceedings, amounting to £7 17s. 3d., together with promises of annual subscriptions to the amount of £26 2s. 6d., and the Bishop having pronounced the Benediction, the meeting terminated.
