The Hon. W. J. T. Clarke, the noted colonial Rothschild, recently paid a visit to Southland and Otago. His arrival created a profound sensation in the former province, it heing rumored that Mr Clarke was coming prepared to purchase large tracts of waste lands. This gentleman, however, departed, leaving in the hands of agents the sum of £3.00,000, to be lent at interest in sums of not less than £5000 each.
Isaac Aldridge, a Mormon preacher, was charged at Shrewsbury, on May 16, with having indecently assaulted a deaf and dumb girl named Alice James. The prisoner had but recently come to this country from America. In his possession was found a diary, in which there was this entry :— ' Addressed the Saints at Wolverhampton and afterwards went to tbe theatre.' He was committed for trial.
The Pope, who has just completed his 76th year, according, to a letter from Rome, in the Journal de Paris, has resolved to announce by a canonical bull, to be issued on June 27 (his coronation day), the convocation of the next general council for Dec. 8, 1868. Formally 12 months* intimation was given, but the improved means of communication and travelling have allowed the Holy Father to the period of notice.
